Negative Friend

I think many people have a friend like the one I am about to describe. A friend whose negativity is what they are known for. A person who is living a fairly good life but somehow manages to be the absolute catalyst for feelings of negativity.

I have several friends who fall into this category, whether that is just who I seem to attract as friends or simply because I live on a college campus.

There is some variations between them and in how they are negative.

For example I am going to start with J. J is a high functioning individual who has been dating the same girl for five years. He lives comfortably in a house with his girlfriend and best friend. They all work and pay rent no problem. For the most part J plays video games about 30+ hours a week on top of working about 30 hours a week. Logging hundreds of hours into games of course he is very good at them.

Now J thinks that it is fun to introduce his friends to the same games he plays and then proceeds to tell everyone that plays with him how they are “garbage” and “trash” because they don’t know the current meta for every item in the game or the best things to do. The icing on the cake is if you introduce him to a game and therefore you have the upperhand due to practice, the game itself must be crap.

Another type of negative friend are those who have no belief in themselves at all. I have two friends who I see every single day and play games with regularly. S and C both function on this idea that they are worth less than the ground they walk on. C believes that he is incapable of anything and that he really is just a waste of oxygen. S has a little more self confidence then that but she has also started drinking heavily and falling into a different pit of despair.

It is hard being around such negativity all the time and sometimes a person just needs a break. For me I play games with my wife and with the last two people I mentioned plus other friends, for reasons the first person mentioned does not reduce stress when playing games with them.

Stranger Things

I had been hearing so many things about the show Stranger Things on Netflix. About how awesome it is and just how great the story was. I took a look at the cover picture and I told myself that it looked silly.

*Below this point there may be spoilers for Stranger Things and Neverwhere*

However the people telling me just how good it was would not stop and because the characters in the show play Dungeons and Dragons my friends thought that I would love it.

Eventually I did cave. I sat down and watched the first episode and then the second and the third. By the time I hit the finale it was three in the morning and my head was spinning with all of the information that I just received.

I felt as though so many things that I have wanted just came together and were made into a movie. The show itself felt like someone was sitting behind the scenes running a game of Innocents in the World of Darkness setting. The characters were all actually being played by a group of friends and each episode itself was another session of the same campaign.

Afterwards I just couldn’t contain myself and I had to explain to my wife everything that just happened. Not only in the show but how it made me feel.

One of my favorite books of all time Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman held a similar idea to the show Stranger Things in regards to there being two worlds. For Neil Gaiman it was London Above and London Below.

In the end the show inspired me to pull out my World of Darkness books and start working on writing a campaign version of Stranger Things. Something that my friends can play in and experience, still different enough from the show that it can stand alone and knowing the show will not make it so that they automatically do everything right.

Being the Game Master

Playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and World of Darkness; one of the most critical members of the group is the GM or DM (Game Master or Dungeon Master). This individual is the one that must work to create and prepare all of the materials for each and every session.

They can choose to use pre-made modules where everything is laid out for them going in, however those individuals still must interpret what was created. They must work with that information and make it relevant to the players that they have in their sessions.
If someone is doing a homebrew they spend hours making all of the material themselves and then still must figure out how to make it relevant to the party.

Being the DM or GM is an exhausting job as you weave a story for hours on end that the players can totally destroy in a matter of moments. It can also be very rewarding as the players all experience a story that you weaved so well that they felt as though they were really in the story.

The greatest compliment to my abilities as a DM was when I had all of my players in tears around me because I told them a story about how someone in the game died protecting them.

I myself prefer to be one of the players because it is a lot of work to create and work on a campaign week after week, month after month, and all the players do is show up to play. With my current group there is no thanks for the work that I do and because of that I do get tired of telling the same story as the players keep following one major quest line. It helps me to switch gears and run a different story for a while, but my players hate that and complain saying that they love the last story so much they don’t want to leave it. Part of the problem is that once a story has been left we as a group never go back because the players graduate from college and leave, or summer time comes and everyone goes home. It is just very difficult to play in my current environment and I would love to have a group of about four dedicated players who were thankful for the effort that I put into each session.

Long post made short- Thank your Dungeon Master or Game Master today, they deserve it.

Dead by Daylight

Here recently I have found myself playing a game with a bunch of friends that I thoroughly enjoy. It has the right amount of everything I am looking for.

  1. I can play it with friends.
  2. While it is horror based it doesn’t rely on jump scares but suspense instead.
  3. It is enjoyable.
  4. The game itself is simple.

In Dead by Daylight there are five total players. Four people play as the survivors trying to escape death by powering up five generators that then power the gates that lead to escape. One person plays as the killer working for the “Entity” to stop the survivors and sacrifice them to the “Entity”.

While this game is dark and offers very little story for the players. What it does offer is endless fun experiencing the different maps and the slight changes that are made in each game. As you play more you unlock perks, items, and overall better skill level at preforming in the game. Making it so that the killer and the survivors are getting better at what they do.

Overall despite all the issues with bugs and the fact that it had a small team that built this game it is one of my favorites and I highly recommend it if you are the kind of person who enjoys playing games with friends.

Krosmaster, League, and AoG

My life is full of gaming I am sure you all have noticed if you have read more than just my few scattered daily posts and things like that. Well a short little life update for today.

Tonight is the second day of the Krosmaster League I run here at The Troll’s Den. We are looking at 6 people being there since one player will be heading home today to see family. Giving out some awesome prize support so that will be exciting.

Afterwards I think several of us are all going to get on and play some League together. We are really all wanting to get to level 30 so as a group we can play ranked. Specifically team ranked matches. This would be a great experience we think and we could learn a lot.

Saturday another event for AoG on campus as we try to spread just how much fun we are. I am taking Force of Will, and other stuff as needed. The problem with owning a lot of games. Everyone can count on you to have a copy of what they are looking for. 🙂

After that guess what! Most likely more team working as we really are trying to become a viable League of Legends team.

Now the downside of this weekend. I am on call for my job so at any point I could have to run somewhere and deal with an incident.

LOL, Garen

First a disclaimer. I do not wish to upset anyone, these are my personal thoughts on the subject and I realize that others will not agree with me. I also know that I will be making some generalizations, these are not factual statements and do not apply to every person.

Judging from that first paragraph I am sure some of you know where this is heading. I hate the League of Legends Champion named Garen. I have several friends who enjoy playing him but still I just do not like the champion.

I like to think that all champions have their own personalities. For Garen he is that stereotypical Jock who is a jerk to everyone else. Taking pleasure in bullying others and never backs off. It does not help my image of the champion when most of the players I have played with who play as Garen complete this stereotype. They are generally highly negative and abusive to other members of the team.

HERE– this link will take you to my review of the different players you can run into playing League of Legends. The Troll is the one I most often run into who chooses to play Garen.

I myself attempted to play as Garen when I first started playing League. He fits the type of character I enjoy playing. A highly aggressive champion with lots of ability to both survive and catch enemy champions. I just could not connect with this champion, coupled with my negative experiences with other people who play the champion I just do not enjoy him.

Garen has some fantastic moves and overall is a decent champion I just don’t like him.

His passive allows him to heal at an incredible rate since if being played properly he will have a lot of time in lane when the enemy champion is dead and has left Garen to his own devices.

His Q has the ability to silence an enemy champion allowing him to get off a couple more strikes before they can truly retaliate.

His W passively increases his armor and magic resistance. While actively it grants a shield for a short amount of time.

Garen’s E is the most important of his moves. It spins him like a top dealing damage to everything within range of this giant man with a giant sword spinning at 90 miles per hour.

Garen’s Ultimate or the R is amazing. Capable of dishing out death blow after death blow to enemy champions. It also targets the enemy with the most recent kill allowing Garen to go into any lane and help anywhere as needed without worrying about being overpowered himself.

Garen is known for his spin attack. You can find lots of pictures on tumblr and on pintrest about this champion and his E ability. For some reason you can also find a lot of images of Teemo and Garen as well.

1 Luxury Item

Keeping up with the Jones’– Tell us about the one luxury item you wish you could afford, in as much detail as you can. Paint a picture for us.

I would love to own my very own house. I know this does not seem like a typical Luxury Item but to me right now it definitely feels like it would be considered one.

My House would sit on 80-160 acres of pasture land. It would have a small herd of sheep and a couple horses to complete the picture. (I have raised both my entire life until college.) Really nothing fancy about the rest of the estate besides my dream home sitting  on the property.

My dream home consists of an entryway with a wood chest that people can sit on to take their shoes off, the chest then opens allowing people to store their shoes on the inside. There is a coat rack on one of the walls able to support 15 or so guests coats.

The Dining Room and Kitchen will be a combined room of sorts. Allowing people to shift seamlessly between the two while carrying food items and other kitchenware.

The Living Room contains all of my gaming items including; TV, xbox, board games, etc… There will be a closet in this room where a folding table and the board games are all stored for easy access.

I will have a Library filled with bookshelves and my books. There will be a fireplace with a lounge chair beside it. A small stand beside the chair with a foot rest to complete the image.

Another room for my Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons Games, with a table made just for that. There are hundreds of images for the different kinds of specialized tables that have been designed for gamers.

Other then that just a few boring bedrooms and bathrooms. Enough for myself and at minimum a wife and 2 kids. At maximum a wife and 5 kids. Yes my girlfriend knows that I dream of having a larger family, lucky for me she comes from a large family so it makes sense to her too.

That is a simple version of my dream luxury item.
